26th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Bishop’s Annual Appeal

The arrival of autumn brings many seasonal changes; the migration of birds, the changing colours of the leaves and, yes, the Bishop’s Annual Appeal.

The Bishop’s Annual Appeal has been an annual rite in our diocese for the past 25 years and, before he left for St. Boniface, Bishop Albert shared his gratefulness for what contributors have been able to support through their generous donations. The development of programs and ministries supported by the appeal has changed our diocese in a fundamental and life giving way. People have seen the needs of our diocese and responded with generous hearts.

But before we congratulate ourselves too heartily let us not forget that there is nothing we can give which has not first been given to us. Whether we give from our surplus or from the bottom of our purse all that we have ultimately comes from our gracious creator. Being able to offer what we are able to help others in need is a precious gift which should not be taken for granted.

For this year’s Appeal St. Mary’s parish has mailed a letter and brochure to each parishioner. This mail out describes the Appeal and the many programs that have benefited in recent years and which continue to rely on diocesan support. Take time to reflect on the brochure and the many ministries and programs reaching out to people right here in our local diocese. Then please understand that if not for the donations from individuals like yourself many of these programs would suffer greatly in trying to provide the same service or, in some cases, even cease to exist.

I thank you for considering the present Appeal and how it might fit into your plan of giving this year. I encourage your support and trust in your generosity. Most of all I pray that the gift of giving will be a grace to you and your family as we, as a parish, offer our support to the many in our diocese who will benefit from our help.

Fr. Jon Hansen, C.Ss.R., Pastor, St. Mary’s Parish

Bulletin Announcements

RCIA We are hoping to start an Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults process this year in our parish. If you or some adult you know would like to become Catholic through Baptism and / or complete the other sacraments of initiation (Confirmation and Eucharist), please contact Fr. Jon or Fr. Tony at the parish office.

WELCOME BACK TO CHILDREN’S LITURGY Fall is here again, and we are at the beginning of another year of bringing the words of the Gospel to the children of St. Mary’s Parish. During the 11:00 a.m. Mass, we invite the young ones to join us as we bring the Sunday readings to them in a simpler language and try to highlight God’s message through discussion, some colouring worksheets, crafts, and, on Pancake Breakfast Sunday, a short movie. We welcome all ages of children, although the activities are geared more for the ages 3 1/2 to 8. Also, we would welcome anyone who would like to become involved with Children’s Liturgy in a leadership or assistant role to contact Vicki Strelioff at 978-0853 or by email at vstrelioff@yahoo.com for details. (For high school students, this would provide an excellent opportunity to complete volunteer requirements for Christian Ethics!)

MINISTRY OF CARE Something to think about… very soon we will hold a meeting to discuss and brainstorm ideas for a Grief & Bereavement Ministry. If this is an area in which you would like to participate, please call Iris at 244-2983, ext. 237 and let me know. I welcome your ideas, thoughts and suggestions. We will determine if there is enough interest to go forward with this meeting. Watch the bulletin for further information. Thanks for all you do!

ST. MARY’S CWL NEWS For our regular meeting on Wednesday, October 7th, we are planning on a pilgrimage to the Shrine to the Venerable Nun Martyrs Olympia Laurentia, located at the Ukrainian Sisters of St. Joseph’s. We are planning to meet at St. Mary’s at 6:45 p.m., then walk to the shrine. Following this, we will return to the hall and have our regular meeting. If anyone is not able to walk, arrangements will be made for a ride. All ladies of the parish are invited to join us on this journey within our own neighborhood. See you there! CWL DIOCESAN RETREAT DAYS: two retreats will be held this year, one in Watson on Wednesday, October 14th and one in Kindersley on October 17th. Both will be facilitated by Abbot Peter Novecosky. For more information or to book your space, please call the parish office and leave your name. A member of the CWL executive will contact you. Registration deadline is Wednesday, October 7th.

2009 BISHOP’S ANNUAL APPEAL Before and after the 7:00 p.m. Mass on Saturday, October 3rd and both Masses on Sunday, October 4th, the volunteer workers will be available to accept your financial donation at the entrance of the church in support of the Bishop’s Annual Appeal for 2009. A tax receipt will be issues for all donations. This is the final week that the donations can be made at the entrance of the church. Please consider this option. St. Mary’s guideline is $38,611.00.

PARISH PASTORAL COUNCIL UPDATE Introductions were made and a warm welcome given to Fr. Jon and new council members. Their commitment to act as members of Council is greatly appreciated. Items addressed at, this, the first meeting of the 2009-10 year included the progress of the Uniting in Faith Campaign; the Parish Mission, December 13 to 15 in conjunction with our 90th Anniversary; future spiritual education programs to be offered at St. Mary’s; and Parish bingos in its new format. We welcome the Spanish community who are celebrating Mass at St. Mary’s on Sundays at 4:00 p.m. The celebrant is Fr. Ciro Perez, C.Ss.R. who has recently joined our Redemptorist Community. There are several events scheduled at St. Mary’s, the first being the Harvest Supper on September 27th, and the Parish Auction on October 17th. We encourage parishioners to support these events by volunteering and/or attending these activities. This is a great opportunity for fellowship, and meeting new parishioners, as well as parishioners from other churches. Next PPC meeting is Wednesday. October 21st.

PREPARATION FOR FIRST RECONCILIATION AND FIRST COMMUNION We are now inviting all parents and guardians who desire their child to receive the Sacraments of First Reconciliation (confession) and First Communion to register between September 15th and October 23rd. You may register in person at the parish office during office hours, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., or by phone at 244-2983.

LITURGY COMMITTEE UPDATE The Liturgy Committee met on September 22nd. We introduced ourselves for the benefit of our new pastor and explained how we became involved with the Liturgy Committee. Fr. Tony was happy to report that there are 7 new altar servers. The seat census will be later in the fall this year, and workshops for lectors and communion ministers will be sometime in January. Instructions will be forthcoming for use of hand sanitizer in church. A sub committee was formed to plan for the Parish Anniversary Mass at 7:00 p.m. on November 14th. As a lead-up to the 90th Anniversary Celebration, the 7 sacraments will be highlighted at the Sunday Masses between now and then. Next meeting is on Tuesday, November 10th in the hall.
