27th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Celebrate With Us…

As many of you know by now, this fall we are celebrating two important anniversaries in our parish: St. Mary’s Parish has existed for 90 years, and for 75 of those years the Redemptorists have served the parish. It is fitting that we celebrate both at the same time, for the two are intrinsically linked. For 90 years people have gathered in our parish to celebrate the sacraments, to pray, to attend daily and Sunday Eucharist, and to rejoice during the major feasts that mark the liturgical life of the parish. These same people also came in joy when family members were baptized and married; they came anxious when someone was ill, and they came in tears when a loved one died. During these 90 years, St. Mary’s parish is the place where the people have come to mark some of the most meaningful moments of their life. It is the place where people come to feed their souls on the Word of God and the Eucharist. For 75 years, we Redemptorists have been privileged and blessed to be the pastors that stood by the side of St. Mary’s parishioners though all of these moments. This is truly a mutual celebration!

One of the ways that we are marking these anniversaries is by reflecting together on the sacramental life of our parish. The Sacraments – Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, Reconciliation, Marriage, Holy Orders, and Anointing of the Sick are all visible signs of the Christ’s work for our salvation. The Catechism says the sacraments are the visible means by which the Holy Spirit spreads the grace of Christ throughout the Church. In other words, over these 90 years, we- and those who have gone before us – have experienced the Holy Spirit at work in our lives and in this parish as we celebrated the sacraments.

Over the next number of weeks between now and the anniversary celebration on November 14th, we will recall this work of the Holy Spirit in our parish by looking at the sacraments as we have lived them these 90 years. During the Sunday masses, starting next week, look for the displays in the sanctuary and join with your pastors as together we pause in a special way to celebrate 90 years of living a sacramental life as a parish with the Redemptorists sharing in 75 of those years. May God bless our anniversary celebrations!

Fr. Tony Bidgood, C.Ss.R.

Associate Pastor, St. Mary’s Parish
