The Healing Sacraments

The Healing Sacraments

The Healing Sacraments

In this weekend’s focus on sacraments we highlight the sacraments of healing; the Rites of Anointing and Reconciliation.

Suffering and illness have always been one of the great mysteries and tribulations of our human condition. Though Christians feel pain and suffering the same way as other people our faith helps us to grapple with this great mystery and gives us courage. Christ reminds us that sickness and suffering can have meaning if we unite it with Christ’s own suffering. Bringing together our suffering with the suffering of Christ aids in our own salvation and the salvation of the world.

Suffering is not punishment for our sins but a part of our natural condition. We look to doctors and nurses to heal us and we are encouraged to strongly fight against illness and to exercise preventative care. In time of illness we also turn to the Church for strength and aid. The Lord showed great concern for the bodily and spiritual welfare of the sick and commanded his followers to do likewise. In the Sacrament of Anointing Christ strengthens the faithful through the laying on of hands by the priest and with the anointing with the holy oil of the sick.

The Rite of Reconciliation addresses another kind of suffering, that suffering caused by sin. In this beautiful and peaceful Rite a person speaks openly and plainly about the effects of sin in their life to the priest who is there representing the person of Christ. While such honesty takes courage, the gift of absolution and being freed from the weight of sin is an experience unlike any other. In the sacrament of Reconciliation we are healed from the wounds that sin has caused, able to walk again in the presence of our God with our heads held high.

The sacraments of healing are God’s invitation to us to be made whole spiritually and bodily. They are signs of God’s love for his creation.

Fr. Jon Hansen, CSsR

Bulletin Announcements

ALL SOULS Traditionally, we remember our loved ones who have died, in our prayers throughout the month of November. At the beginning of the month, there will be special envelopes for All Souls at the entrances of the church. On the front of the envelopes, you can print the names of those you would like to have remembered in a special way throughout November. You can leave your envelope near the Book of the Living that will be placed near the altar. We will transfer the names from the envelope to the book. All donations in the envelopes will be for Masses offered for the deceased during November.

BISHOP’S ANNUAL APPEAL This year, St. Mary’s guideline is to raise $38,611.00 in support of the Bishop’s Annual Appeal. To date, through the generosity of many parishioners, we have received $27,640.00. The volunteer workers are nearing completion of contacting all parishioners for their support of the Bishop’s Annual Appeal. If you were not contacted, you may call the parish office during business hours and arrangements will be made to accept your donation. A number of parishioners have committed to a donation by placing it in the Sunday collection basket. If you have not fulfilled this promise, you may do so by marking a separate envelope “Bishop’s Appeal” with your name. A tax receipt will be issued. The target deadline for this year’s appeal is November 1st. Let’s continue to uphold St. Mary’s tradition of being generous when asked to be.

MINISTERS OF HOLY COMMUNION AND LECTORS the new schedules for November—January will be available next week. It is important to note that while we are not offering communion from the cup, as per Diocesan policy regarding H1N1, we will still be scheduling a communion minister for each Mass to distribute the hosts with the priest. Therefore, all communion ministers are asked to please pick up their schedule when they are available from the sacristy. If you have any questions about this policy, please call the parish office. God bless you all for your dedication to these ministries!

ALTAR SERVER MEETING The next altar server meeting will take place on Saturday, October 31st at 11:00 a.m. in the church. All altar servers are urged to attend this practice and then enjoy a great lunch!!

FAITH – LIVE! This is an event for young adults (approx 18 -30) to gather with one another and talk about issues of faith. We will using movie clips, YouTube videos, music, etc as the material for our reflection. There will also be prayer & scripture reading, faith sharing, and, for a social time, we thought we’d have a board games night to follow! We have a special guest speaker: Fr. Santo Arrigo, CSsR. We are also having pot-luck snacks to munch on, so bring your favorite to share. Please join us at St. Mary’s Parish (park in the lot and then come to the front door of the rectory) on Sunday, November 1st at 7:30 p.m. We are looking forward to welcoming you and having great evening together!

Memorial Mass Tuesday, November 3rd, 7:00 p.m. Please join our parish community for the annual Mass in memory of our deceased loved ones here at St. Mary’s Church. Refreshments and fellowship will follow in the hall. Please call Iris at 244-2983, ext. 237 to include the names of your close family members and loved ones who have died this past year before October 27th.

St. Mary’s Parish Auction

The Auction Committee and the staff of St. Mary’s Parish wish to congratulate and thank all the parishioners of St. Mary’s, the volunteer workers, the CWL, the K of C, those who attended the sale and the many businesses and individuals who support this event through very generous donations.

This year, our Auction raised $20,318.31.

The phenomenal success of this event year after year is a testament to our faith, by putting into practice the stewardship of our abundant resources and blessings, given to us by god, to share with those less fortunate.
