First Sunday of Advent

Bulletin Reflection

In my home, while I was growing up, Advent was always a special time. Our house was filled with symbols that reflected the countdown to Christmas. My favourite was the paper calendar hung on the wall which contained 24 little perforated paper doors, waiting to be undone by little hands, in order to reveal surprise images relating to the season whether it be snowflakes or pinecones or candy canes What I remember most about those calendars is how hard it was to open just one or door at a time and to not rush ahead to see what all the others contained before it was their time. I knew however, that if I would give in to the temptation the magic of the tradition would be ruined and the anticipation would be lost.

Jesus speaks to us in the Gospel for the first Sunday of Advent and says “Beware, Keep Alert, Keep Awake”. Honestly, how can we be anything else in such a season of high anticipation? Our senses are surrounded by so many stimuli how can we possibly fall asleep? But there is a catch. Like the little doors on the paper calendar which enticed me to move out of the moment and to satisfy my curiosity by opening everything at once the trouble lies not in falling asleep but in being aware of the importance of each passing moment. As we move into this season of advent and begin preparation of our house and our hearts for Christmas we are confronted by many competing demands which grab our attention but do not necessarily help us to prepare properly. Jesus says, “Heaven and Earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away”.

Are we focusing on those concerns which are bound to pass away or do we have our attention fixed on the word of God which will sustain us. This year let us resolve to not come to the end of advent saying I was so busy, “where did the time go?” Let’s not rush through this season in a frenzy of activity but appreciate each nugget of time for the true gift that it is. In doing so may we be awake, and aware, of the word of God in our lives and be instruments of that word for our families, our communities and for the world.

We wish to inform you that due to rising food costs, we have had to increase our prices. Adults are $5.00 each, children under 12 are $2.00 each and children under 6 are free. At the breakfast in December, we will be selling “Keep Christ in Christmas” vehicle magnets to promote the true spirit of Christmas. People often forget the real reason for the Christmas season while they are buying presents, decorating their homes, and attending parties. These magnets are a way to silently evangelize this sentiment. You can help spread the reason for the season by buying your own vehicle nativity magnet for $5.00 from the St. Mary’s Knights of Columbus. Thank you for your support!
