Third Sunday of Advent

Guadate Sunday

The prophet Zephaniah opens our readings this weekend with the injunction, “Rejoice and exult with all your heart”. The letter to the Philippians continues the theme as it echoes, “Rejoice in the Lord always, again I say rejoice.”

We are celebrating the third Sunday of Advent which is traditionally known as Gaudate Sunday, which is Latin for Rejoice or Joy Sunday. Today we light the third candle on the Advent wreath which is a different color from the others signaling a transition from penitential purple to a more joyful pink.

Joy is a word that does not get a lot of use in our vocabulary. When asked how we are feeling a person might respond with the usual “fine” or on a particularly good day might say, “Great”. But how often would one respond, “I am feeling joyous” or “joy filled”. Yet, as Christians that is the hope that Jesus has for us, that we would be full of joy as we followed in His way.

Perhaps we don’t think we experience joy because we have come to misunderstand its implications. We might think that the experience of joy would lead us to irrational acts of celebration, like the devoted fans at a Roughrider game or to displays of emotion like people in love who have been reunited after a long separation. Joy might lead us to that. But more often Christian joy is not about big displays but about inner peace and the knowledge that we are loved.

Are you able to see the difficulties in the world and trust that everything will be alright because God is in charge? Are you able to give willingly to those who are in need even though you don’t have a great deal yourself? Are you able to be patient with those who are difficult to love because you know that God loves them as well? If you can do those things it is probably because deep in your heart you are filled with joy because of what God has done for you.

KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS NEWS Our next pancake breakfast will be held on Sunday, December 13th following the 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. Masses. We wish to inform you that due to rising food costs, we have had to increase our prices. Adults are $5.00 each, children under 12 are $2.00 each and children under 6 are free. At the breakfast in December, we will be selling “Keep Christ in Christmas” vehicle magnets to promote the true spirit of Christmas. People often forget the real reason for the Christmas season while they are buying presents, decorating their homes, and attending parties. These magnets are a way to silently evangelize this sentiment. You can help spread the reason for the season by buying your own vehicle nativity magnet for $5.00 from the St. Mary’s Knights of Columbus. Thank you for your support!

ST. MARY’S ADVENT RECONCILIATION SERVICE will be held on Monday, December 14th at 7:00P.M. This will happen during our parish Advent Mission which runs from December 13th to 15th. We warmly invite you to come out and make this an important part of your Advent preparation for the celebration of the birth of Christ. Jesus came so that we may know the love of God; forgiveness is a wonderful way to experience that love. So come out on the 14th and let God love you!
