Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

The Living Word

Every time we gather to celebrate Mass we celebrate not one but two Liturgies. We celebrate the liturgy of Eucharist when bread and wine are offered at the altar and become the body and blood of Christ. We also celebrate the Liturgy of the Word during which time readings from Scripture are proclaimed from the book of readings called the Lectionary.

The Liturgy of the Word is an essential part of the celebration of the Mass as this is the time when we hear the Good News and take it into our minds and hearts. The minister who reads from the Lectionary is called the Lector. The role of the Lector is not just to read words off a page but to proclaim the Word of God. In doing so the words, which might otherwise be considered as an ancient document, come to life for those who hear them and they becomes a living message for our time and place.

This past week we held workshops for all of the Lectors of St. Mary’s to remind them of their important responsibility in Proclaiming God’s word. It is also important to remember that each one of us gathered also have a responsibility; not to just be in the pew but to be active hearers of the Word.

One way we can do this is by first familiarizing ourselves with the Sunday readings at home using a missalette, a bible or clicking on the link to the daily readings on the parish website (www.stmarysaskatoon.com). By looking at the readings first at home we can then be listeners and good hearers in the Church letting the words move us.

Ultimately the Word of God is meant to convert our hearts as we become more like Christ. As a symbol of this conversion the Lectionary will no longer be carried out at the end of Mass. It will remain in the pulpit as a sign that the word of God proclaimed during the mass now lives in our hearts. It is up to us to carry the word out of the Church and into our community.
