Pentecost Sunday – May 24, 2015

In the 2nd reading (Galatians) St. Paul reminds us that if we are led by the Spirit,  we will experience the fruits of the Spirit: love, peace, joy, patience…and will inherit the Kingdom of God.  However if we are led by the spirit of the world and the desires of the flesh, we will suffer enmities, strife, jealousy, dissensions, envy, drunkenness…and lose out.

In the Gospel Jesus promises to the disciples that He would send them the Holy Spirit, the Advocate, the Spirit of Truth, who will remind them of all the things that He has taught them.  They are to testify to the Truth of the Gospel, and He will guide them as they testify to the Truth.  On Pentecost that promise was fulfilled.  Jesus continues to send his Spirit to all, through prayer, Community, the sacraments and the teaching of His Church.  “I will be with you all days, even to the end of time.”

In summary, on this feast of Pentecost, what a dramatic change in the disciples’ disposition and demeanor when ’they were all filled with the Holy Spirit.”  These previously terrified people are now all filled with the dynamic power of God-the power that refreshes and re-creates, that comforts and heals, a power so eloquently acclaimed in today’s psalm response:  “the Spirit burned within them like tongues of fire” and they went out and proclaimed the message of God’s love as manifested once and for all time, in the resurrection of Jesus.

The first disciples had their day, and they seized it with a gusto that has been remembered down through the centuries.  Now this is OUR DAY.  We now have a chance to show others that “the Lord Jesus is risen indeed!”
